Why is midlife the perfect time to become an entrepreneur?

You’ve climbed the corporate ladder, reached that level of stability where you have a steady income and a level of success you are comfortable with.  You are a somebody, you feel accomplished, you are known.

And yet, deep down, you are unsettled.  Working “in corporate” has lost its shiny appeal and you long for independence, flexibility and your own terms.  You find yourself thinking about the creativity and freedom of being an entrepreneur and the chance to build that new business you’ve been dreaming of.  The opportunity to be your own boss, create your own wealth and work on something that truly excites you.

So what is it that is holding you back?

The thought of making a big change midlife is terrifying.  What if it’s a failure?  What will people think?  Can you really walk away from the security and stability of your current job?

These thoughts are valid but it’s time to reframe them and embrace the positives of entrepreneurship.

Think what you bring to the table in your midlife and why it is in fact the perfect time to take that leap…

You’ve spent years learning a multitude of skills, honing your craft, building your networks and navigating the challenges of your career. You have experience and emotional intelligence and a few gray hairs to boot. You’ve lived!  And most probably had to deal with a myriad of issues pertaining to family, friends, relationships and more.  All of this gives you a real head start when it comes to starting your own business.  In fact I would say it gives you a significant advantage over your younger compatriots.

Think of entrepreneurship as starting a new chapter and believe that anything that you don’t know can be learned along the way.   Trust yourself that you are worth taking that chance and that your own wealth of personal resources and experience will stand you in good stead. It will never be the “right time” so stop thinking it will come.  Reframe your thinking and start asking “What if? and “Why not now?”
